Redwing opens Driver CPC Training Centre

The Driver CPC logo.
Redwing Coaches offers Driver CPC Training Courses.

We now operate our own fully accredited Driver Training Centre, offering training for the new mandatory Driver CPC professional qualifications.

Training courses will be available for Redwing drivers, and also for drivers from other organisations.

The Driver CPC is for PCV drivers who drive professionally throughout the UK. Developed as a requirement of EU Directive 2003/59, it's designed to improve the knowledge and skills of professional PCV drivers throughout their working life.

There are two parts to the legislation: firstly, the Initial Qualification that must be achieved by new PCV drivers along with their vocational licence to enable them to use their licence professionally. Secondly, Periodic Training, which involves all professional drivers undertaking 35 hours of training every 5 years.

Courses will be run by Steve O'Sullivan, who is not only a fully qualified teacher and professional trainer, but also an experienced Redwing coach driver. Steve has the perfect combination of skills to guarantee effective, practical and authoritative training.

Our training centre in north London is purpose built and state of the art, with a high-spec suite of presentation and IT equipment.

The inaugural course commences in January, when Steve will be taking eight experienced Redwing drivers through a Periodic Training course, including: Procedures and Driver Regulations; Health and Safety; Role and Responsibility of the Driver; Customer Care; Issues Affecting Safe and Effective Use of the Vehicle.

If you employ PCV drivers who require Driver CPC training, please contact our Sales Team in the first instance, on 020 7733 1124 option 2.

Left it too late? Celebrate Christmas in January!

Santa Claus
You don't have to celebrate Christmas in December!

We still have limited availability for your Christmas Party evening transfers in December - but you'll have to be quick, Christmas is nearly upon us!

Did you know that increasing numbers of companies are holding their Christmas Parties in January?

It's an excellent strategy - staff and guests love it as it's one more event to enjoy before settling down to the hard grind of another New Year.

Company managers love it too - there are fantastic deals to be done with restaurants, venues and entertainment in the weeks following the mad pre-Christmas rush.

However and wherever you decide to enjoy yourself, we'll take you where you need to go. Comfortably, safely, efficiently and without fuss.

Network Rail saves money by coach

Train tickets.
Coach hire is usually considerably cheaper than the train.

The BBC reports that Network Rail is transporting 200 staff by coach from Reading to Coventry for a conference because of the high cost of train tickets. Apparently they don't get a discount from the train operating companies.

It's an excellent example of choosing the best transport method for the required itinerary. Sometimes the train might be better, and at other times, as here, hiring luxury coaches is by far the better business decision.

In this case, according to the BBC, buying train tickets for all the staff would have cost £135 each, a total of £27,000, whereas a local coach hire company quoted £2,400, or £12 per person.

The total saving for Network Rail, by avoiding travelling on their own railway, is more than £24,000.

Bear this in mind the next time you send a group of people to a conference or exhibition. You can save a lot of money by hiring a coach. Or, for the price of sending a few people by train you can send a lot more people by coach.

Planning a Spring wedding?

Wedding of Alex and Andrina Board, 2003 (Used with kind permission).
Avoid travel trauma and hire a coach for your wedding guests.

If you're planning a Spring Wedding, now is the time to sort out your guest transportation.

You can do things the old way and allow scores of guests to converge haphazardly on the church, register office and reception venue under their own steam.

Or you can do things the clever way, and provide a luxury Redwing private coach service from a convenient central meeting point (for example a railway station or a car park) to the ceremony, then on to the reception and back to the meeting point.

The advantages are numerous: everyone arrives in the right place at the right time. No one gets lost. Parking is not a problem. Drink-driving is avoided and there is invariably a happy, party atmosphere amongst the passengers.

Check out our Wedding page, where we explain the benefits of this proposal in more detail.

Our Sales Managers, Leslie Okyne and Tanya Matthews, will happily discuss all the possibilities in detail, and help you plan for the big day. Just call Leslie or Tanya on 020 7733 1124.

Redwing's fleet is one of the youngest in Europe

An old coach. Photo: Terry Torch.
Here's a typical coach from the 1970s. The driver in the photo drove for Redwing many years later.

Why hire an old coach when you can hire a Redwing coach?

When you're ringing around for quotes, make sure you ask 'How old is the coach we'll be travelling in?'. Whilst there's nothing wrong with a well-maintained older coach, there's no doubt that a modern coach fitted with the latest safety and comfort features is far preferable.

Because Redwing regularly buys brand new coaches to replace existing coaches in the fleet, we have one of the youngest fleets of luxury coaches in Europe. For example, we placed a multimillion pound order for 16 Mercedes Benz Tourismo coaches back in July this year, for delivery early in 2010. And a few months earlier, in February this year, we took delivery of 11 brand new coaches worth £2.5 million.

This means our customers and their passengers always benefit from the latest technology, in terms of comfort, performance, safety and environmental factors. We maintain our coaches to the very highest standards, using our own highly trained engineers in our own well equipped workshops, complete with giant inspection pits and a sophisticated 'rolling road'.

Ask our Sales Managers, Leslie Okyne or Tanya Matthews, for details of our competitive rates. They're waiting for your call on 020 7733 1124.

The Red Bull X-Fighters Motocross World Series circuit at Battersea Power Station in August 2009.

The Red Bull X-Fighters came to town in August. For those not in the know, X-Fighters is a spectacular International Freestyle Motocross World Series.

The London event took place at night beneath the iconic towers of Battersea Power Station, on a hair raising course constructed specially for the event. The riders performed incredible acrobatic (or should that be aerobatic?) stunts for an audience of over 18,000 fans.

Redwing Coaches were there too, operating a shuttle coach service, utilising 10 coaches every day over a 4 day period.

We're good at running efficient shuttle services, so if you have a requirement for this type of service, either now or in the future, call our Sales Managers, Leslie Okyne or Tanya Matthews, on 020 7733 1124 to find out more.

Kevin Peck nears Land's End on schedule

Terry Pyper and Kevin Peck
Terry Pyper, 27 (left) and Kevin Peck, 46 (right) are currently on their 1,000 mile charity cycle ride from John O'Groats to Land's End.

Intrepid cyclists Kevin Peck and his nephew Terry Pyper have nearly reached Land's End, twelve days after setting out from John O'Groats.

Kevin has worked for Redwing for many years. This trip is for charity Cancer Research UK, in memory of his mother, Terry's grandmother. We wrote about their preparations back in April.

Kevin and Terry are ably supported by Terry's sister Lesley and her friend Hazel, who are driving the support car, sorting out meals and pitching the tents.

By the end of Day 12, Thursday 6 August, Kevin and Terry had covered 822.7 miles of the 1,000 mile journey. It's just a couple of days now until their planned arrival at Land's End on Saturday 8 August.

Lesley and Hazel have been blogging every day, with a lively and funny commentary about the trials and tribulations of life on the road, often in appalling weather conditions. It's well worth a visit, just CLICK HERE!

We wish Kevin, Terry, Lesley and Hazel every success as the finish line draws closer!

Read their blog at www.endtoendjuly09.blogspot.com - you can also securely donate online to Cancer Research UK using the special link on their blog, to help them meet their target. It's a very worthwhile cause.

Online Quotes - easier and better than before

Back in June we quietly upgraded our Online Quote service to make it easier and more intuitive to use. Then we sat back to see what would happen.

The result? A steady flow of serious Online Quote enquiries confirms what we'd hoped. The new Online Quote form has proved very popular, and customers like the fact that they can ask for a quote at any time of the day or night.

If you'd like a quote with Redwing you have several options:

Update: 16 July 2009

16 new coaches on order for January

Redwing Coaches always has one of the youngest and most technologically advanced fleets of coaches in Europe.

Last week we placed another multimillion pound order, this time for 16 Mercedes Benz Tourismo coaches, for delivery in January 2010. Twelve are 49 seater executive coaches with WC and other refinements, and four are 53 seater standard coaches without WC. They will replace existing vehicles in our 76 strong fleet.

For many years, Redwing has had a policy of continuous replacement. We regularly buy brand new coaches, built to our own specification, and use them for a relatively short period by coach industry standards, before replacing them with new coaches.

As a result, our clients benefit from comfortable, reliable transportation in technologically advanced vehicles fitted with the latest advanced safety systems, and complying with - and often exceeding - the current 'green' standards.

Check back through our Archive News pages (links at top right) and you'll find frequent stories about our multimillion pound investments in new coaches.

Mini Coach Fleet Expansion

Redwing 19/16 seater Mini coach.
Our mini coaches are comfortable, stylish and luxurious.

Our fleet of Mini coaches has proved very popular with clients over the last two years, so we have added one more vehicle to the fleet.

The new 19 seater Mercedes Benz Mini coach arrived last week and is now in service.

Our Mini coach fleet now comprises four Mercedes Benz Mini coaches, all of the same design. Three of them have 19 seats and one of them has 16 seats, but includes additional luggage space.

Unlike the Mini coaches offered by some competitors, our vehicles are not cheap van conversions, but proper, luxurious and comfortable Mini coaches, with a beautifully designed cabin, panoramic windows and sophisticated climate control.

Take a look at our Coaches page, which includes several photos of the exterior and interior of our 19 seater Mini coaches.

The joys of air conditioning

Thermometer. Photo: © Petria Follett (bodgie) via sxc.hu
Avoid this kind of situation! All Redwing coaches have sophisticated Climate Control Air Conditioning systems.

Now the sun is shining with a vengeance, people of a certain age will remember the days when coaches didn't have sophisticated Climate Control Air Conditioning systems.

It got hot in those old coaches as the sun beat down on their huge, single-glazed, untinted panoramic windows.

Back then, before even basic air conditioning was introduced, the summer ventilation option consisted of spring-loaded push-up windows in the roof above the central gangway. Brave (and tall) passengers would jump up and open the overhead windows, then other disgruntled passengers would promptly shut them again. Sometimes group leaders took a vote on whether the windows should be open or closed. Many coach drivers ruthlessly enforced a 'no touching' policy, and everyone had to put up with the driver's definition of 'too hot'.

But nowadays everything is miraculously different. Modern coaches have double-glazed, tinted windows which offer excellent thermal insulation. And sophisticated climate control systems mean that everyone now travels in considerable comfort, whatever the conditions outside.

If you haven't travelled by coach for a while you'll be impressed by how comfortable it is nowadays. Perhaps it's time to give it a try? Things have changed!

CPT to address London coach parking concerns

Colin Miller, Assistant General Manager of Redwing Coaches.
Redwing's Colin Miller chairs the CPT National Coach Parking Committee (London Sub-Committee).

Colin Miller, Redwing's Assistant General Manager, chairs the inaugural meeting of the Confederation of Passenger Transport's (CPT) National Coach Parking Committee (London Sub-Committee) on 12 May at the CPT headquarters in London.

Coach parking in London is a complex issue, with differing regulations applying across the 32 London boroughs. The new London Sub-Committee aims to work closely with Transport For London, local boroughs and councils to firmly establish exactly what coaches can and can't do when setting down, picking up or parking in London.

It's an issue of great importance, not only to coach operators and drivers but also to the continued success of the London tourism industry, in which the coach hire industry and the CPT play important roles.

The trip is in memory of Kevin's mother, Terry's grandmother, Winnifred Peck who died of cancer in July 2007.

Kevin and Terry decided to do something positive to help fight this killer disease and this carefully planned project is the result.

They've set up a Blog called EndToEndJuly09 at www.endtoendjuly09.blogspot.com. Take a look!

Kevin Peck.
Kevin Peck works for Redwing. In July he's cycling 1,000 miles from John O'Groats to Land's End with nephew Terry, in aid of Cancer Research UK.

You probably don't know Kevin Peck. But we know Kevin and everyone at Redwing Coaches is right behind him. He has worked for us for many years.

Take it from us - this is a well-organised, worthwhile charity project that deserves your support!

Will you consider making a donation to Cancer Research UK to support Kevin and Terry's cycle ride from John O'Groats to Land's End in July 2009?

It's easy to read requests for charity donations like this and just pass them by. But sometimes it's great to take positive action - right now - and make a donation, because every sum, however small, helps fight this killer disease that affects so many people's lives.

Please go to the team's JustGiving page at www.justgiving.co.uk/terrypyper and you can make a donation quickly and securely by pressing a few buttons. It's as quick and easy as that. And if you're a UK taxpayer the value of your donation is boosted by a whopping 28% - find out how on the JustGiving page. Help make a difference!

If you can help out with supplies, equipment, accommodation or other practical services, Kevin and Terry would love to hear from you too. Visit the EndToEndJuly09 blog for details of logo opportunities and trip details.

Neoplan Tourliner, factory demonstrator.
A Neoplan Tourliner factory demonstrator.

We've ordered a further 7 brand new luxury coaches for delivery in September 2009.

They are Neoplan Tourliner 53 seater coaches from Germany, powered by MAN diesel engines that comply with the tough Euro 5 emissions standard.

The Euro 5 level of emissions performance will not be required by the regulations in the UK for several years to come. This means we are now well ahead of the game, taking advantage of the very latest technology to offer comfortable and environmentally efficient coach travel.

Our fleet size will remain at 75 coaches, as the new coaches will replace 7 existing coaches.

Can you tell us about any others? We'd like to know!

The Redwing coach captured on Google Street View above was in Buckingham Palace Road at the junction with Victoria Street, SW1.

Double rear axles for extra load capacity

Double rear axles for extra load capacity.
Double rear axles for extra load capacity.

Four of our newest coaches have a little something extra - an additional rear axle.

These tri-axle coaches are slightly longer than our other coaches, measuring 13.7m compared to the usual 12m. Their primary advantage is an increased luggage capacity, mainly in terms of weight rather than volume.

They are ideal for large groups of passengers with heavier than usual luggage, for example cruise ship passengers.

The cabin layout is slightly more spacious too as, despite the extra cabin length, we have opted to retain the same 49 seat configuration as our other coaches, rather than adding an extra row of seats.

EXOR accreditation renewed

Redwing Coaches is an EXOR Accredited contractor.
Redwing Coaches is an EXOR Accredited supplier.

Once again, Redwing Coaches has successfully been granted Exor Accreditation for the tendering of Local Authority business. We've now been accredited for several years.

If you don't know what 'EXOR' is, here it is in a nutshell: Local Authority buyers are obliged to tender for the purchase of many products and services. The tendering procedures are strict and thorough and, as a result, they can be costly and time consuming to implement, both for the local authority and the supplier.

EXOR is a commercial organisation that vets potential suppliers, subjecting them to detailed research and questioning. Suppliers who pass the tests are Accredited for the tendering of Local Authority business. Most local authorities accept Exor's ratings and this simplifies and speeds up the tendering process, with obvious benefits for all concerned.

By taking the trouble to become EXOR accredited we're providing Local Authority buyers with independent proof of the quality of our business operations, and making it quick and easy to purchase our coach hire services. As the EXOR website explains: 'A business with EXOR accreditation is known to be financially stable, compliant with legislation relevant to the work carried out by the business, and reliable, with a trading history checked by the sourcing of independent references.'

If you are a Local Authority funded buyer please give our friendly Sales Managers, Leslie Okyne or Tanya Matthews, a call on 020 7733 1124 to discuss all your coach hire requirements for the coming months.

For the 23rd year, Pricewaterhouse Coopers are staging their Charity Pantomime. This year it's Sleeping Beauty and it's at the Peacock Theatre, just off Kingsway in central London.

And once again, PwC have booked their travel requirements with Redwing Coaches.

Every year PwC bring in children from boroughs all over London to enjoy the pantomime. Thousands more children in childrens hospitals all over the country also get to see the pantomime thanks to a televised link, including the nearby Great Ormond Street hospital. More than 200 PwC staff contribute to the show in their free time.

We'll operate a total of 75 coach movements over a 6 day period. Monday 26 January will be the busiest day of all, when we'll transport about 900 children to and from the theatre for the matinee performance.

The pantomime is open to the paying public too, from 29-31 January 2009. You can book here, directly with the theatre.

This type of large scale, time critical coach transfer must be run with military precision otherwise it will turn into a pantomime itself. Extensive forward planning is required in cooperation with the local authorities and the police.

Redwing are specialists in this type of operation. If you need to move large numbers of people quickly and efficiently from point A to point B please give our Sales Managers, Leslie Okyne or Tanya Matthews, a call on 020 7733 1124 and they'll help you organise a painless and cost effective large scale transfer.

Travel door to door in a warm Redwing coach.

Unless you are a polar bear you've probably noticed how COLD it is right now.

'Britain is in the grip of the longest cold snap for more than 10 years, as forecasters predict another week of freezing temperatures', according to the Daily Telegraph.

So don't stand on freezing railway platforms, or walk in Arctic conditions from the car park to your final destination. Hire one of our warm, climate controlled luxury coaches and travel literally from door to door in complete comfort. No stress, no worry, and highly cost effective too.

We're prepared for almost any weather conditions - indeed many of our drivers routinely use snow chains on their coaches during harsh conditions in Europe so, by comparison, a chilly snap in England doesn't present much of a problem.

Call our Sales Managers, Leslie and Tanya, on 020 7733 1124 to discuss your next trip.
